Artist Statement:
I started this painting back in December 2025. There was a vision living rent free in my mind and I couldn’t shake it. Earlier that year, I almost stepped on snakes while walking (on 2 separate occasions). This was a season of shedding, which is very ironic because 2025 was the year of the snake. I knew that this was happening, but I didn’t know what was about to come during the process of creating this painting.
My entire soul was poured into this piece and I happened to create it while going through one of the hardest seasons of my life. The beginning of 2026 rocked my world (not in a good way). It was the time where I learned that rock bottom has a basement. My financial struggles caught up with me and I was on the brink of loosing everything. After the holidays, it is considered to be the slow season for artists and I was having a really challenging time finding a job to float me through the remaining winter solstice. I did Instacart, Uber Eats and DoorDash. I was barely scraping by, but I made sure to pay my mortgage and car payment.
It taught me something important… who my real people in my corner are. There were people in my life who publicly watched me struggle and did nothing about it. There were people who publicly celebrated me and casted judgment and hate in real life. Their actions did NOT match the watered down phrases. It was the season of shedding and let me tell you… it was nothing short of brutal. I walked away from habits, mindsets, limiting beliefs, friendships and even family members to protect my peace.
The snake represents suppressed anger and the wisdom that’s been forced underground. It symbolizes words that became venomous only because they were swallowed for far too long. Snakes aren’t evil symbols, they’re ancient. They survive without permission.
Why is the snake coming out of her mouth? It isn’t about being silenced in a passive way. It’s about speech that has been held too long, compressed, made dangerous, coiled. It’s truth with teeth.
This is a painting about what happens when a voice is denied oxygen. It’s about speaking your truth even if the ripples echo for miles. It’s about standing up for what you believe and letting the mask fall off.
The woman represents a goddess. No matter what happens in life, don't loose your crown. If the weight of life gets heavy and your crown hits the ground, pick it back up, straighten it and remember who the f**k you are.
